THERE were two winners of the latest Echo Fan of The Match Award, brothers Ben and Alex Coughlan from Drimoleague in West Cork.
Ben is 13 and Alex is 11 and both enjoy Gaelic football and athletics as well as soccer. Ben’s favourite player is Conor McCormack and he particularly enjoyed last summer’s friendly against Burnley as he got to meet some Ireland internationals while he also thought the Liam Miller game in Páirc Uí Chaoimh was amazing.
His five-a-side team would include, alongside himself, “Conor McCormack to rule the midfield, Dáire O’Connor to bring some skill to the team, Alan Bennett for experience and tackling and Garry Buckley to add some magic.”
He ranks Gearóid Morrissey’s wondergoal at Finn Harps in March as his greatest, saying that “if Lionel Messi scored that goal, everyone would be talking about it for years!”
He loves City because he is from Cork and the players always give 100 percent for the club. In addition, John Caulfield’s mother-in-law taught his mother Diana in fourth class in primary school in Enniskeane.
Alex’s favourite player is Karl Sheppard, though he used to like Ronan Coughlan due to sharing a surname. The 5-0 win over Derry City last July was his first City game and remains his favourite, while his five-a-side team would include Karl Sheppard, Garry Buckley, Shane Griffin and David Harrington.
Kieran Sadlier’s strike from inside his own area away to St Patrick’s Athletic in May of last year is Alex’s favourite City goal and he loves the Rebel Army because, “I’m from Cork, a Rebel through and through, and they’re the best team in the world!”
