ALTHOUGH the performance of the night at another successful BAM Cork Cork City Sports was the new Irish all-comers and meet record of 8.20m in the long jump by Luvo Manyonga, a number of exciting finishes on the track gave the large crowd plenty to cheer about.

Manyonga, who has best of 8.65m, was silver medallist at the Rio Olympics and is also the reigning world champion, Commonwealth champion and Diamond League champion and was one of the biggest names to appear in Cork for many years.

After her two fourth places in both the 100m and 200m, Bandon’s Phil Healy — who set an Irish 200m record of 22.99 at last year’s meet — was still happy with her performances. Sixth at World University Games last month, Healy is recovering from a broken foot earlier in the year.

“It’s great to have a meet here in Cork like this. It’s also great to put myself out there in those less than ideal conditions. My body is not recovering as quick [since breaking my foot] but I’m dealing with what I have. 

"That’s another 23.40, I’ve run slower than that this year and it’s in less than ideal conditions, it was freezing cold and windy, so I’m very happy,” said the 24-year-old.

A competitive 800m saw Isaliah Harris of the USA holding on to win in 1:47.41 from Spencer Thomas and favourite Jake Wightman. Ireland’s Mark English, seeking the 1:45.80 qualifying for the World Championships, failed to finish.

There was also a close finish to the women’s 3000m where Katrina Coogan (USA) just got the better of Britain’s Charlotte Arter to win in 9:01.42. Leevale Olympian Michelle Finn, better used to the same distance over barriers, was ninth in 9:24.45.

Leevale racewalker Alex Wright sharpened up for the World Championship 20km with a good second behind young British athlete Callum Wilkinson, a medal winner at the recent European U23 championships.

Although Wright’s time of 11:06.28 was outside his national record of 10:58.47, he was well pleased. “I’ve been training in Spain for the past couple of weeks and haven’t done much speedwork, so I’m happy with that, especially before the home crowd,” he said.

The open 3000m saw a runaway victory for Niall Shanahan from the An Bru club in Limerick. A regular winner on the Cork road scene, Shanahan would probably have broken his best of 8:41 but for suffering cramp over the closing stages.

“I’m delighted, I fell here last year on the back straight so it’s great to win. I knew coming down the last 200m the lactic acid was setting in,” said Shanahan who clocked a time of 8:48.22.
