Éire Óg 2-13 Douglas 0-5

AN assured display by senior debutants Éire Óg blitzed Douglas to book their place in Round 3 of the SE Systems senior championship in Castleroad on Sunday evening.

From the throw-in, Éire Óg dominated despite Douglas having the aid of a stiff breeze. They took the game to the seasoned campaigners who really need to do a root and branch after a display that left a lot to be desired.

Outside of Julia White who ran herself into the ground, Pamela Mackey, Joy Leo, Katelyn Holland and Amy Curtin, Douglas were well below the standard required.

The night belonged to Éire Óg. They have good hurlers in every line of the pitch and when you add in a savage workrate you are capable of taking anyone on.

Éire Óg’s defence of Aileen Hennessy, Aoife Hennessy, who did a great job on Joy Leo, Aideen Buckley, Emma Quigley, Siobhan Hutchinson and Aoife O’Callaghan were superb.

They closed Douglas down in the early stages and set down a marker. On nineteen minutes a Douglas attack was stopped in its tracks and cleared well by Aoife Hennessy. Emma Crowley gathered and found Marie Gleeson who finished confidently to make it 1-5 to 0-3.

With the better hurlers all over the pitch Éire Óg’s support play was a contributing factor to their superiority and with Margaret Herlihy unerring from placed balls they were full value for their eight-point half time lead.

Éire Óg didn’t let up and also won the second half. Joy Leo, getting very little supply inside, had to come searching but that further diminished any inside threat Douglas had.

Margaret Herlihy’s penalty was saved but Marie Gleeson pounced to tap home her second of the night to give her side a 2-11 to 0-4 lead on 50 minutes at which point they began to introduce a number of subs.
