Newcestown 2-9 Enniskeane 2-8

THE local rivals put on a big show in the SE Systems Intermediate Camogie Championship final at Castle Road with plenty of skill and grit on show.

The neighbours were well matched but a strong showing midway through the second-half saw Newcestown emerge victorious against their local rivals. It was a jubilant Mary McSweeney who received the Nano Nagle Cup.

Enniskeane’s Orla Cronin; who finished with a goal and five points almost snatched a late draw. She had a difficult free right on the left touch-line but her effort sailed narrowly wide of the uprights. Cronin had made an immediate impact on the game; as she goaled within a minute. Her initial attempt was blocked down but she re-gathered and smashed the ball past Orla Dineen.

The ‘Player of the Game’ Ciara O’Sullivan helped Newcestown respond with two quick points. The second of which almost led to a goal after she made a great surge forward. Enniskeane’s defence closed down her space and she slotted it over the bar instead.

Enniskeane created a couple of goal chances; with Sinead Hurley settling for a point while Tara Sheehan had a chip flicked away by goalkeeper Orla Dineen. Cronin slotted over the resulting 45; to help establish a 1-3 to 0-4 lead after twenty minutes.

Ciara O’Sullivan then produced some magic. A ball was played in by Aoife O’Sullivan and Ciara flicked it around the defender and struck first-time into the net. She and Cronin then traded points before Maria Kenneally helped Newcestown to a 1-6 to 1-4 lead at the break.

The game remained nip and tuck until a great burst by Aisling O’Donovan set up Aoife O’Sullivan for a goal with O’Sullivan adding a further point to put her side five points up.

Enniskeane rallied but Newcestown’s rear-guard action was strong; led by Captain McSweeney. A long-range Daire O’Brien free sailed into the net and Cronin reduced the gap to a single point with her fifth free.

Her last effort proved a bit too difficult as Newcestown held out for a thrilling victory.
