Sarsfields 1-13 Milford 1-7

OFTEN the game you most look forward to may not live up to expectations and certainly the opening half between Sars and Milford was one such game in the SE Systems third round clash in Castleroad.

Lining out without centre-back supreme Áine Watson, who is due to have a cruciate operation tomorrow after getting injured in the win over Ballygarvan, in addition to a number of retirements didn’t help Milford’s cause.

On the scoreboard Milford were in this game for long periods, but playing defensively while having the wind, they struggled to get scores up front, Eimear Watson’s four frees their total first-half return.

Sars, on the other hand, looked far more dangerous with five scorers on the board in the opening thirty. The game improved in the second half. You felt Sars were never in danger of losing, despite a huge effort by Milford.

Once Hollie Herlihy goaled after two minutes of the restart it seemed the game was going run away from Milford. It became a physical encounter which will bring Sarsfields on hugely. In what was a great win for them you could see their maturity building.

Katie Barry at full-back had a big presence as Sars held their own against the seasoned North Cork side.

They stood up to the challenge and picked off some lovely points. What a great battle Hollie Herlihy had with Ashling Thompson. Claire Mullins and sub Michelle Barry were troublesome for Milford with Eimear Fennell her usual consistent self.

With the game opened up Sarsfields hit five without reply to give them a healthy 1-11 to 0-6 lead. Milford continued to press forward but the calibre of the substitutes Sars introduced such as Olivia McAllen, Claire Holland and Edel Lonergan shows the strength in depth in the squad.
