Newmarket 1-22 Kilbrin 2-11
NEWMARKET ended a 40-year wait to regain the Duhallow JAHC from Kilbrin at Tullylease yesterday.
The victors were men on a definite mission from start to finish, the haunting memory of last season’s defeat by Dromtariffe providing Newmarket with a motivation that wasn’t going to be denied.
With a competent all-round team performance, Newmarket’s movement was positive, their link play impressive, and their work-rate helped them dominate the key sectors.
A perfect start saw a long delivery from Paddy Browne find man of the match Conor O’Keeffe to billow the Kilbrin net.
For a spell, Kilbrin snapped out of their lethargy, yet Newmarket’s game carried a greater threat, five points without reply helping to secure a 1-11 to 0-7 advantage at the break.
Though falling further adrift, Kilbrin refused to wilt, and goals in quick succession from substitute Daniel O’Sullivan and Niall Field helped trim the deficit to five points.
Newmarket weathered the storm, with main marksman Donal Hannon on target from play and placed balls, allowing team captain Alan Ryan to lift the John Joe Brosnan Memorial Cup.
Both clubs go forward into the county series.
Newmarket will be favourites against Tracton’s second team, runners-up in Carrigdhoun, while Kilbrin face a tough task to get past the city champions Brian Dillon’s.
Those games are scheduled for next weekend in what will be a bumper Sunday of fixtures.
