FORMER Cork City midfielder Pierce Phillips has joined Cobh Ramblers for the 2020 League Of Ireland campaign.
The 21-year-old, who made seven first team appearances for last term for City, departed the Rebel Army at the end of the 2019 season.
Phillips will be seen as a very good addition to the Ramblers first team setup, having also spent time on loan at St Colman’s Park during the 2018 season, when he played 19 times for Cobh.
“I’m delighted to have signed and to get the deal done,” Phillips said.
“I know a few of the lads from my time here two seasons ago and there’s a good squad here so I’m looking forward to getting the season started.
"We want to push on and hopefully we can make the year a successful one.”
Phillips began his playing career with Rockmount before spending three seasons with Cork City U19s from 2015 to 2017.
He also has been capped for Ireland at Colleges & Universities Level and was a key figure in Cork City UEFA Youth League side a few years ago.
The UCC student will be seeking to benefit from getting regular game time and also helping Ramblers to try and mount a more sustained challenge at the playoffs in 2020.
The news of Phillips’s signing comes as the club also confirmed that defender James McSweeney has signed back up for another season at Ramblers.
Having initially signed for the Cobh U17 team back in 2016 from Cork City, this will be his fifth season at the club.
McSweeney made his senior debut in a Munster Senior Cup tie with Limerick in 2017 and in total has made 75 first team appearances while at Cobh, The 20 year old has been capped at Republic of Ireland U18 level and was named the Cobh Ramblers young Player of the Year in 2017.
Having come through for Carrigaline United at schoolboy level, McSweeney was a key part of the Ramblers EA Sports Cup run to the final in 2018 and also the Cobh First Division runner-up campaign of 2017.
Cobh Ramblers are set to make more first team squad announcements over the coming weeks.
