CIT 1-10 DCU 3-13
DCU's three goals proved crucial in the Electric Ireland HE GAA Fresher 1 Hurling Championship opener in Cork IT on Monday night.
DCU were in command for large spells and although CIT refused to give up the fight, they couldn't reel them in.
The hosts did get the opening score through a well-taken effort on the run by Frankie Herr.
DCU responded in kind with a clinical free on the right-hand side in the fifth minute from Ross Banville. That was before another effort from a free by DCU keeper James Lawlor from long-range ended up in the net.
Cian Crowley slotted over a score for CIT on the quarter of an hour mark, before Danny Allen converted a free on the right.
DCU continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over, including through further frees and a fine score from distance.
A critical second goal then arrived for the Dublin college and again they got a slice of luck, as Liam Dunne converted via a deflection off a CIT defender.
Dunne raised a third green flag when he raced in before finishing powerfully, while David Blanchfield scored with a fine effort from distance.
At the half time break, DCU led with a commanding advantage, 3-7 to the 0-5. The Cork side had a lot of ground to make up, though O’Donovan got an early second-half goal to give them a glimmer of hope.
Unfortunately, DCU were able to keep potting over points to keep CIT at arm's length.
From that point on, DCU were able to cruise towards the finishing line.
Conor Scully scored a fine solo effort heading into the final 10 minutes of play, as his side left Leeside content with their night's work.
CIT aren't out of contention in the championship yet as there is a round-robin format in place but they've a lot of work to do from there. Interestingly Bride Rovers' Brian Roche was in attack for CIT, while his twin brother Eoin lined out in the full-back line for UCC, who recorded a win over WIT.
