OLIVIA McALLEN is the worthy December 2019 winner of the Rebel Óg monthly award, sponsored by the Clayton Hotel Silver Springs and Cummins Sports (award sponsors) in association with The Echo and RedFM, (media partners).
In 2019 Olivia had the honour of captaining both the Cork U16 camogie and football teams following the success of her clubs, Sarsfields Camogie Club and Glanmire Ladies Football Club.
Overall she won six county titles, two Munster titles and an All-Ireland title this year, as well as sitting her Junior Cert.
The camogie team had a one point victory over Galway in the All-Ireland final while the Cork ladies football team had a great victory over Kerry to win a Munster title after a great finish to the game.
Sarsfields had five girls that were part of the camogie panel while Glanmire Ladies Football had four players on the county squad which included Olivia’s twin sister Aishling.
Olivia had a very enjoyable year with Cork and would like to say a special thanks to all who helped in any way.
Olivia has been playing GAA with her clubs since the age of five along with her three sisters. This year was a great year for Glanmire Ladies Football and Olivia was part of their U16, minor and U21 teams that brought back county titles to the club.
One of the many highlights of Olivia’s year was to be part of the Sarsfields camogie team, coached by Emmet Fennell, who won the County senior title after a 30-year wait. There were great celebrations after defeating a very strong Inniscarra team who were the reigning champions.
Olivia was also part of the Sarsfields teams that enjoyed county success this year at U16 and minor level.
She would like to thank all of her coaches and selectors especially those at her clubs who give up a huge amount of their time to support all of the girls.
