The passionate Neptune club man was heavily involved in coaching, both at club level and with Irish teams, and passed away after an illness.

Aherne was involved when Neptune were last crowned Super League champions in 2003, when he rallied the club around after the tragic death of gifted young baller Emmet Neville.

Aherne was a talented underage player himself and a noted rebounder. He had a deep grá for hoops and promoted the sport at every opportunity.

Former Demons, Neptune and Tralee coach Pat Price described him as a "gentleman. A terrific coach, but more importantly a thoughtful, caring guy."

A common thread in the tributes to the Neptune stalwart were his positive outlook, sense of humour and friendliness as well as his coaching nous.
