AS the sports lockdown continues, players, mentors, coaches and even parents who never picked up a hurley or kicked a ball are looking for ways to stay active, stay sane and keep the brain ticking over.

So far there have been lots of challenges posted online. The first one was sent out by Cork captain Patrick Horgan with lots of others coming on stream as clubs and players follow suit as the bid to hold the interest of younger players continues.

For the older generation, it is a very tough time and many clubs have been posting on their social media channels a lot of old pictures and reliving days gone by.

We have had some fantastic articles here on The Echo as our colleagues pick their best teams, remember the games that still live in their mind’s eye or just remember players and mentors who have brought us the best that is and was Cork sport.

Des Cullinane, children’s officer with both the Cork GAA Board and Glen Rovers, and chairman of St Nick's GAA club, has come up with a new idea that he hopes will interest many of his club’s older members, former players, backroom personnel and supporters.

Des is hoping to gather as many memories as he can from days gone by in his club and the call is going out to get the stories in.

“During this time of isolation, many people will be looking for ways to stay active. I just thought it would be a way to keep our members and supporters occupied and maybe we could build up a club history with a difference. 

"We already have our club histories The Spirit of the Glen and The Nicks of Time, and they are wonderful publications, but these memories will be the ones we may not have heard.

“You would be amazed at some of the fantastic stories people have to relay from days gone by and things that happened so we are hoping that we will get all of these together and who knows what might happen with them. 

"It would be great to hear from people and we are reaching out to everybody so if you have a story please send it to us. 

"We want your memories, stories, match reports, funny incidents, we are looking for people to recall and record their memories of Glen Rovers/St Nick’s GAA down through the years. 

"Tell us about your favourite matches, your favourite players, traditions you followed when going to games. Share memories of incidents you remember or anecdotes about any aspects of Glen Rovers/St Nick's life; we want all these stories.”
