THE stopping of action for the foreseeable future in the Premier League because of the coronavirus has in the process put a halt to a fine season for Sheffield United.
Central to their success has been Bishopstown native John Egan, who has been a rock at the centre of the defence.
Speaking at a club press conference recently, Egan revealed talks have commenced over a new contract with the Blades.
“Talks have just started,” said the Irish international.
“It’s between the powers that be to sort it out. I love this football club, I love playing for Sheffield United and it’s great that the gaffer values me highly.”
The prospect of Egan signing a new deal is sure to be at least something positive for fans of the club, during what is a very uncertain time globally because of coronavirus.
The 27-year-old has been a vital figure during Sheffield United’s rise through the leagues.
Since joining from Brentford at the start of last season’s promotion campaign, Egan has become a fans favourite and one of the first names on Chris Wilder’s starting team sheet.
The Blades are seventh in the Premier League at the moment, just two points behind Manchester United in fifth and currently in the final Europa League spot.
Only Bayern Munich have conceded fewer goals in the calendar year than the eight Sheffield United have conceded so far in 2020, a stat which Egan is proud of.
“Being a central defender, I am really proud of it,” adds Egan.
“We pride ourselves on clean sheets and not conceding goals. To have one of the best defences is really pleasing.
“You saw Didzy (David McGoldrick) clearing one off the line against Norwich after Hendo made a couple of great saves.
“We have that desire to keep the ball out of the back of the net. For myself it is really pleasing that we have a great defensive record because that is our job, but it is a team effort.” Egan consistently has produced the goods this term for Sheffield United and it is clear that manager Wilder things very highly of him.
“John is such a great guy and humble,” said Wilder when speaking in an interview with Off The Ball.
“He is an outstanding man, brave and one that has taken to the division(Premier League) “He has been brilliant for myself off the pitch and on the pitch. John is so consistent and produces performances week in and week out.
“I am delighted he is enjoying his time at Sheffield United and producing the goods.”
