Presentation College 1-18 Christian Brothers 1-9

CHRISTIAN Brothers College had to give way to a stronger Presentation College at Kilmallock on Friday in the All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Senior A hurling quarter-final (Croke Cup).

There was little time for CBC to get over the disappointment of last Saturday’s Dr Harty Cup final and while they were in a good position at half time only four points adrift after playing against the strong wind, the Athenry side pushed on after the break.

Jack Cahalane was the CBC top scorer again registering eight points, and his free-taking was superb both with and against the wind. CBC made three changes from the Harty decider with Sean O’Leary, Cillian Egan and Eoin O’Leary replacing Eoin Downey, Eoghan Kirby and Denis McSweeney.

Presentation Athenry were off the mark quickly with CBC goalkeeper Eoin O’Neill called into play in the opening minutes. The Blarney custodian fouled Thomas Hynes who was bearing down on goal, but he made a fine save from the resultant penalty which was taken by Gavin Lee.

A few minutes later he was in action once more when he put himself in the way of the in-running Patrick Rabbitte denying him a shot at goal.

However, it wasn’t long before wind-assisted Presentation found the scores. They had four points on the board - one a superb sideline cut from Liam Leen – before Christians opened their account. The Cork score was a big score finished by Robbie Cotter in the ninth minute and was brilliantly set up by Cahalane and Eoghan Kidney.

At the end of the first quarter, CBC had drawn level 1-2 to 0-5. The Presentation scores were coming that bit easier especially from the accurate Lee who is an experienced Galway minor.

CBC were dealt a big blow two minutes from the break when Rabbitte got on the end of a Leen side-line ball and found the net. The green flag left Christians trailing 1-9 to 1-5, but they were turning to play with the elements.

They didn’t restart as they would have wished, it was the Galway outfit that started to put the scores on the board. Lee was at his best, and with plenty of support play around him, they move 1-13 to 1-6 in front with the fourth quarter to play.

Cahalane sent over the CBC point from a free in the 39th minute.

The Athenry school had more options up front, while their defence did their job only allowing CBC 1-2 from play overall.

Presentation kept their foot to the floor and they closed with a selection of points from Lee and Rabbitte to extend their advantage at the end to nine points.

They were defeated in the Connacht final by St Raphael’s of Loughrea but could yet have a say in this championship. They will play the Leinster champions Coláiste Eoin of Dublin in the semi-final on Monday week.
