Corinthian Boys 3 Evergreen 0
CORINTHIAN BOYS are through to the semi-finals of the SFAI Skechers U13 National Cup as they comprehensively defeated Kilkenny side Evergreen 3-0 at Castletreasure on Sunday afternoon.
A clinical brace from striker Padraig McGrath and another close range finish from James Traynor was enough to see Corinthians secure the impressive win and cruise into the last four of the competition.
Corinthians came into this game in a confident mood as they currently sit top of the Cork Schoolboys League U13 Premier Division, six points clear of second placed Lakewood Athletic.
The home side almost took the lead on 10 minutes but after a good cross from the right flank by Joe Mouret, winger Mark O’Brien saw his goalbound header blocked by the Evergreen defence.
But they weren’t to be denied for too much longer as they grabbed the goal their fast start deserved thanks to Padraig McGrath.
This time the danger came from the other wing as left back Frankie Sheehan’s superb cross deflected kindly into the path of McGrath, who then had the simple task of firing home from a couple of yards.
Evergreen eventually settled into the contest and went close to snatching an equaliser on 18 but Patrick Lacey headed wide at the back post after being picked out by Ryan Burke.
But Corinthians remained in control of proceedings and after Chris Harrington saw a stunning strike somehow saved, they finally doubled their lead at the beginning of the second half.
Mark O’Brien skillfully beat his marker inside the box and his low cross was met at the front post by McGrath and he cleverly turned the ball past the keeper for his second of the match.
It was now just a case of how many goals Corinthians were going to score and after McGrath went close to netting his hat-trick, James Traynor made it 3-0 from almost on the line following good work from Chris Harrington and Daniel Mellerick late on.
