Cork Soccer: West Cork league kicks off again to finish the current season
The Drinagh Rangers squad, who currently lead the West Cork Premier League.

BACK in action once more is a West Cork soccer league scene that restarts this weekend with a few crucial games, particularly in the Premier Division.

Currently, Drinagh Rangers lead the pack, but their lead is a tenuous one. They sit five points ahead of second-placed Ballydehob and six clear of Clon Town who have a game less played than the aforementioned teams.

However, the leaders' biggest danger is a Dunmanway Town outfit who have three games less played than Rangers and if they can garner full points from these then they will go two ahead.

All of the leading quartet are involved in Sunday’s action with Rangers battling against Clon Town while Dunmanway Town tangle with Ballydehob in a home tie. After these games, the picture should be a bit clearer but wins for Drinagh and Dunmanway would more or less leave the title race a two-horse affair.

On Monday evening Togher travel to take on Durrus in a relegation battle between two of the bottom three teams. They are locked together on 13 points with Togher having a game less played. This will be evened out when Togher take on Dunmanway Town on Wednesday evening in a local derby clash in Mohona.

So the next three or four games should give a much clearer picture of matters at either end of a table currently propped up by Bunratty United.

On the cup scene, two Championship Cup quarter-finals will be played with Mizen AFC playing host to Spartak Mossgrove in a high noon shootout between two of the top teams competing in this league.

The other quarter-final joust will see Castletown and Aultagh Celtic involved in an afternoon local derby affair in Castletown. Castletown Celtic will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Castlelack in a Division 2 league game.

The first ball to be kicked in the return to normality will be in Saturday’s U19 League clash featuring Ardfield and Bunratty United. A Bunratty victory would enable them to leap-frog over Togher Celtic at the top of the table. A win for Ardfield would bring them back into a mix where Dunmanway Town is also involved.
