Better balanced St Vals defeat Kinsale in Group B of the SFC
Despite playing well Cork star Orla Finn couldn't stop her side from losing to St Vals in the senior championship.

St Vals 2-11

Kinsale 1-10

ST VALS were victorious following this keenly contested affair with Kinsale in the Cork Ladies Senior Football Championship group B stage game in Carrigdrohid on Monday night.

The game was an overall competitive battle and the exchanges were lively and vibrant by both sides throughout.

It was St Vals who began in determined fashion. Ciara McCarthy slotted over a close range free, with Joanne Down also opening with some well taken efforts.

Kinsale responded in kind through some deft footwork and fine score taking by their Cork star Orla Finn, but it was Vals who led at the opening half water break 0-4 to 0-3.

St Vals then added to their tally through another McCarthy point.

But Kinsale responded by finding the back of the net. Sadbh O’Leary showed electric pace to break away from her marker, before passing the ball across and it was knocked home by Geraldine Tyner.

Faye Ahern got a fine individual effort to leave Kinsale holding a two point advantage at the half time break at 1-5 to St Vals 0-6.

But it was Vals who went back in front moments into the second half from the penalty spot, when Laura Buttimer cannoned her effort in off the underside of the crossbar.

Bernie Cronin was to slot points over the bar well for Vals to put them three points ahead.

Finn responded with some more well worked scores for Kinsale.

St Vals though showed their strong mettle, with Down finding the back of the net with a curling effort. Buttimer was to add to her tally, along with another Down point.

With the game in the latter stages, Kinsale refused to throw the towel in. Ahern and Finn added to their scoring tally.

They almost ensured it was a grandstand finish, but Sadbh O’Leary had an effort on goal blocked down vitally by the Vals defence.

This was to be the Mid Cork side’s night, with their persistence and hard work paying off dividends on this occasion.

The remaining fixture in this particular group will take place on the 8th of August, when Kinsale will go up against Bride Rovers.
