O'Sullivan's brace sets Newcestown on road to big win in senior camogie championship
Newcestown's Aoife O'Sullivan shoots from Enniskeane's Daire O'Brien during the Cork Camogie SE Systems intermediate championship final at Castle Road last year.

Newcestown 6-15

Imokilly 1-6

ON a muggy mid-morning last Saturday with not a puff of wind in Castle Road Newcestown comfortably advanced to round 4 of the SE Systems senior championship.

It was fairly evenly matched between the sides before a goal by Aoife O’Sullivan on eighteen minutes put a little distance between them and there was no looking back for Newcestown after that.

When Ciara O’Sullivan’s twelve-minute penalty was saved with the score sitting at 0-3 to 0-1 it seemed as if that could prove pivotal such was the closeness of the tie.

But Newcestown started to get a grip on proceedings with their defence doing very well, Rachel Hallahan in particular and with Miriam Crowley busy around the middle of the park Newcestown began to gain the upper hand.

Collette Desmond was a massive handful inside and by the twenty second minute Newcestown led 1-6 to 0-1. On twenty-six minutes Aoife O’Sullivan had Newcestown’s’ second goal and they took a 2-7 to 0-4 lead into the break.

Three goals from the dynamic Desmond put this game well beyond the reach of Imokilly by the end of the third quarter. Her first two were from the top drawer giving Imokilly’s net minder no chance.

The third came high off the top of the upright after a long delivery by Miriam Crowley fell into Desmond’s path.

Imokilly gave their allocation of five substitutes a run as they develop their divisional side and Newcestown continued to pile the pressure on.

Orla Dineen was highly competent in goal dealing with any Imokilly attacks while outfield Rachel O’Hallahan, Meabh O’Donovan, Aoife O’Sullivan, Grace Ryan and Colette Desmond stood strong.

Substitute Olive O’Mahony had Newcestown’s sixth goal on fifty-two minutes while Imokilly finished with a surge scoring 1-1, Faye McGrath hitting the net.

Newcestown now advance to the round 4 where they’ll play Courcey Rovers.
