St Catherine’s 3-13
TWO flashes of second-half magic from the impressive Aoife Hurley gave St Catherine’s a grip at the end of the third quarter of this SE Systems senior championship clash in Castle Road on Monday afternoon.
Enoying the majority of possession in the opening 30 minutes St Catherine's held just a one point advantage at the interval.
Ballygarvan settled quickly and took an early lead, Catriona Kelly who returned this year from retirement showing she has lost none of her accuracy pointing two long to range frees.
Inside ten minutes the sides were level 0-3 a piece, points from Finola Neville from play and a Linda O’Donnell pointed free leveling matters.
St Catherine’s with Finola Neville, Laura Hayes and Aoife Hurley hugely effective took a grip on proceedings and running at the Ballygarvan defense they began to find gaps.
In the 14 minutes Aoife Hurley had the ball in the net for a goal. She collected a pin-point pass from Finola Neville, then she swiveled and side stepped her marker before finishing to the net.
Continuing to apply huge pressure St Catherine’s picked off three points without reply Finola Neville, Linda O'Donnell and Laura Hayes all picking off scores.
With Michaela Buckley dropping back deep behind her defense Ballygarvan were winning possession but a strong Catherine’s rearguard where Rachel O'Callaghan, Laura Hayes and Ann Marie Rohan we’re hugely effective never allowed them settle.
At 1-6 to 0-3 with eight minutes to the break St Catherine’s looked in control but Ballygarvan battled back and got them selves back into the game with three scores without reply, two Catriona Kelly points each side of a clever hand passed Isobel O'Regan goal put just the minimum between the sides at the break.
Ballygarvan came out all guns blazing for the second half and with Michaela Buckley now operating in a forward role they tested the Catherine’s defense but all credit to them they never lost their focus as they withstood huge pressure.
Settling her side back into the game Finola Neville hit two excellent points before Hayes showed her skill with two superb goals that gave Sarah Ahern no chance in the Ballygarvan goal, the first a superb effort after a long solo run.
Boosted by this, St Catherine’s upped the pace as they outscored Ballygarvan five points to one.
As the clicker towards full time Michaela Buckley grabbed a Ballygarvan goal before Catriona Kelly added a late point to end the scoring.
St Catherine’s now head on to round three with Ballygarvan taking on Milford in the losers round.
