Clyda Rovers 2-7

Fermoy 2-6

CONOR FLANAGAN was the toast of Clyda Rovers on Sunday evening as his late goals rescued victory from the jaws of defeat for his team in this Bons Secours Cork SAFC tie played in Killavullen.

Fermoy had looked the likely victors for most of this contest as a two-goal burst from their own Martin Brennan in the first-half had given them a cushion that had looked unlikely to be reined in.

But Flanagan, who was substituted after 37 minutes, had other ideas. His first act on his re-introduction was to crash a goal past Liam Coleman after a superb catch.

Ruairi O’Hagan then tapped over his third point to keep Fermoy a goal ahead, 2-6 to 1-6 before Conor Corbett then reduced the margin to two as the game went into added time.

There was still time for further drama, however, as Flanagan claimed a long delivery from Cian O’Sullivan before being fouled for a penalty.

There was no doubt who would take it, Flanagan firing the ball home to blow Group C of this championship wide open.

Fermoy were the more clinical team in the opening period, with Brennan a constant menace.. He struck for two opportunist goals, kicked a sweet point from play, made another for Pádraig de Róiste and led the attack brilliantly.

Clyda were overly reliant on Corbett and he kicked three first-half points. Paul Cronin had their other score while Ruairi O’Hagan was on target for Fermoy to leave them leading by 2-3 to 0-4 at the break.

They kept their Avondhu rivals at arm’s length on the resumption, with further scores from O’Hagan and de Róiste while points from Paudie Kissane and Cian O’Sullivan kept Clyda close enough.
