St Michael's 1-11 Carrigaline 1-9

ST Michael's made the perfect start to their Rebel Óg Premier 2 Minor Football Group 2 campaign as they narrowly defeated Carrigaline 1-11 to 1-9 in Mahon.

A superb individual performance from forward Luke Herlihy — which saw him claim eight points — inspired Michael's to a narrow victory against a spirited Carrigaline.

In front of a smaller crowd than usual due to restrictions brought about by the Corona-virus pandemic — as well as the wet and windy weather conditions — the home side settled into the game quicker than their opponents.

The excellent Luke Herlihy opened his side’s account for the evening with just two minutes on the clock with a superb strike, shortly before full-forward David McPolin went one better as he found the back of the net.

Good work by Eoin O’Sullivan released McPolin close to the goal, and the number 14 emphatically drilled his shot across the keeper and into the far bottom-right corner.

But Carrigaline responded perfectly just a couple of minutes later as midfielder Patrick McBarron charged past his man before drilling an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net, making it 1-1 to 1-0.

The visitors would only add two further overs to their tally before the break while Michaels, led by Herlihy, grabbed six to ensure they were in front 1-7 to 1-2 at the interval.

The blue-and-yellows were a different team in the second period, as they began to split the uprights more often thanks to Rhys McCarthy and McBarron.

But Herlihy remained deadly and his four points in the second half ensured St Michaels returned to action with a narrow but deserved win.
