Lakewood 5 Wilton United 1
WILTON suffered their heaviest league defeat in many years when they were beaten 5-1 by Lakewood in the opening round of games in the GE Healthcare Senior Ladies Premier Division match at a very wet Lakewood.
This was the first week of games of a short 2020 season which will run until mid-September.
Premier League holders Wilton, who were defeated by Riverstown in last season's delayed Challenge Cup final a few days earlier, found themselves outplayed by a classy Lakewood team who were two up in the first 20 minutes.
Both teams came forward from the start – Lakewood’s Michelle McNally’s effort from the far side flashing across the Wilton box while at the other end, keeper Lauryn Murphy did well to cover from Emma O’Driscoll and Lydia Looney.
Lakewood took the lead in the 15th minute when Chloe O’Donovan’s high ball hit the net and doubled their lead five minutes later in a similar fashion courtesy of Kara Lacey from outside the area.
Wilton attempted to get back into the game and were creating forward moves which were dealt with by a stern Lakewood defence, although Lydia Looney managed to weave past three defenders and get a shot off, which was well covered by Murphy.
The home side increased their lead even further on the half-hour when Elaine O’Sullivan turned the ball into the net from an acute angle near the corner to make it 3-0.
Wilton came forward to attempt to get back into the game kept the hosts in their own half and were duly rewarded with a goal in the 43rd minute when Ava Ronan met Looney’s pass in the centre and slotted the ball home.
Murphy did well to cover from an advancing Ronan moments later as Wilton looked for a second, but Lakewood had a chance right on the stroke of half time which went wide of the post.
Lakewood continued to create chances in the second half with chances falling to Sarah Geaney and Chloe O’Donovan while Wilton’s Lydia Looney had a chance from 25 yards which went wide.
By the 62nd minute, Lakewood had added a fourth through Elaine O’Sullivan’s long-range free while minutes later O’Sullivan’s effort clipped the top of the post.
Despite the conditions, play from both sides was top class with some excellent moves forward, tight defending with play going from end to end with chances falling to both teams.
The home side made it 5-1 courtesy of Niamh O’Donoghue’s 15-yard shot right on the stroke of full time marking a great start to the 2020 league campaign for Lakewood.
