Aghada 4-12 Kinsale 3-12

AN UNBELIEVABLE finish saw Aghada get the better of Kinsale in their Cork senior ladies football quarter-final clash at Rostellan on Saturday night.

With two minutes to go they were five points down and it looked all over for them. But in that time they scored 2-2 to turn the game on its head to now face West Cork in the semi-final next week.

Emma Farmer got the first goal to put two points in it and then they would have taken a draw. But they hit two points to equalise and extra-time looked likely until Christine Moran hit the winner with the last kick of the game.

With Farmer, Hannah Looney, Sarah Leahy and Mary Leahy leading by example they showed they weren’t going to be beaten and displayed magnificent spirit to keep going to emerge victorious.

Finn got Kinsale off the mark inside 30 seconds and she added their second to double their lead.

Five minutes in and Aghada were on the scoreboard when Miah Sweeney Phelan was fouled and Farmer cooly slotted home the resultant penalty.

Farmer added two points, to put them 1-2 to 0-2 up with nine minutes gone.

But Finn was in no mood for hanging around and from the restart she gained possession, beating several players to blast to the back of the net.

She quickly added a point to put her side back in front.

Farmer equalised, with Aileen McGrath putting Aghada in front and with 22 minutes gone they were awarded a second penalty.

This time Hannah Looney was fouled and Farmer was spot on again, to make it 2-4 to 1-3.

But again Kinsale responded, with Sadhbh O’Leary pointing and a sweeping team move saw Jenny Murphy find the back of the net to level it, 2-4 apiece.

Finn got the last score of the half to see her side a point up at half-time.

Early points from Looney, Bennett and Farmer put Aghada back in front, with Finn and Ahern replying at the other end.

A brilliant individual goal from Lorraine Copithorne put Kinsale back in front, 3-7 to 2-7, with 42 minutes gone.

Mary Leahy was then sin-binned for Aghada and Copithorne added a point as Kinsale were getting the better of the exchanges.

But three points from Farmer kept Aghada in touch and with 10 minutes to go it was 3-8 to 2-10.

Two points apiece from O’Leary and Finn looked like winning it for Kinsale as they built up a 3-12 to 2-10 lead with two minutes left.

But Looney played a brilliant ball to Farmer who found the back of the net and it gave them the boost they needed.

Points from Farmer and Kaitlin Smith levelled it and then another brilliant ball, this time from Sarah Leahy set up Moran for the winner in a superb game from start to finish.
