Inniscarra 2-14 Ballincollig 1-5

THIS Mid-Cork derby in the first round of the SE Systems Senior Camogie Championship saw in a big win for Inniscarra in a one-sided contest at Ovens.

Despite playing into the wind the opening half, Inniscarra led 2-8 to 0-2 at the break.

To their credit, Ballincollig improved in the second half, and an excellent display by their full-back line kept Inniscarra at bay with some excellent work by Leah Weste, Sarah Keating, and second-half substitute Miriam O’Leary.

Ballincollig netminder Leanne Doyle, who was only named on the team just before the start, brought off some spectacular saves.

However the slick passing of Inniscarra proved decisive, with Aileen Sheehan and Ellen Murphy causing big problems when they ran at the defence.

Inniscarra raced into a five-point lead inside the opening 10 minutes with Joanne Casey getting two, Orla McCarthy one, along with a free and a 45 from Niamh Dilworth.

A great solo run by Sam Coomey set up Denise Cronin for Ballincollig’s opening score, but Inniscarra’s response was quick as a solo run by Sheehan saw Dilworth find the net.

They followed this up with a point from Murphy and a shot from Sheehan was blocked by Doyle, but Eimear O’Reilly slapped the ball into the net to leave Inniscarra 2-6 to 0-1 ahead at the water break.

Two frees from Dilworth to one by Casey left the Inniscarra side 12 points ahead at half time.

Olivia O’Leary pointed for Ballincollig but then went 20 minutes without a score as Inniscarra tagged on three points.

Two points from Patricia Buttimer and a goal from a free by Casey saw Ballincollig finish the stronger.

Ballincollig now face Douglas in the losers round.
