Aghada 2-14 Inch Rovers 2-11

SUNDRENCHED Rostellan was the venue for this Cork Ladies SFC match between two great rivals, who had both beaten Fermoy in this group en-route,

Therefore, this encounter offered the winners so a place in the senior quarter-final, with the loser going to the B county semi-final.

Aghada had the better scoring average coming into this match, but the game felt like a final in so many ways for these two East Cork sides.

It was a lively opening quarter with Aghada looking to Cork star Hannah Looney to dominate in the middle and she pointed after just 60 seconds of play and was to play a major player later in the outcome of this match.

Inch reacted well with excellent play and pinpoint accurate free taking by Annie Walsh slotting over three of four unanswered scores in the opening 10 minutes.

Both sides battled for supremacy in the middle and in the second quarter Inch started to get on top with goals from Angela Welsh and Aoife Walsh.

Aghada rallied towards half time and a Rachel Leahy goal brought the sides closer, but a couple of late scores saw Inch lead it by three points at the short whistle.

The second half was a battle with both sides playing their hearts out.

The key moment of the game came on the 46th minute when Looney met the ball on the run and slammed in the vital goal to give Aghada the lead for the first time since the opening minute.

Aghada now with their tails up never looked like losing and Inch just found it so hard to get the ball up the field.

Three late frees from Emma Farmer really did the damage, despite some great responses from Inch’s Annie Walsh.

Aghada will play in the last eight of the county championship now and they are a side with massive potential.
