St Finbarr’s 2-9 Wolfe Tones 2-6

ST Finbarr’s got their Premier 2 MFC off to a winning start at Togher on Wednesday night.

Key to the Barrs win was the play of Ruairí Fitzpatrick at centre-back, Ben O’Connor and centre-forward and midfielders Ethan Twomey and Ben Cunningham.

Wolfe Tones would have been fancied by many to win this and when they got two goals just before half-time it looked like they had turned it in their favour.

But all credit to the Barrs they never let their heads drop and dominated for much of the second half for a deserved win. But they left it late with a goal from Stephen Ozabar Kennedy sealing their win, with the sides level at that stage.

Grantas Bucinskas opened the scoring for Wolfe Tones with William Buckley on target for the Barrs to level it. Twomey got his first to put them in front, with Buckley on target again to increase their lead.

Buckley got his second as the Barrs led 0-4 to 0-1, with 22 minutes gone. Bucinskas got Wolfe Tones second from a free before a sweeping move saw Adam Buckley goal for the Barrs.

This put them 1-4 to 0-2 up but Wolfe Tones hit back, with Mathew Hooton pointing before two goals in two minutes, from Colin Walsh saw Wolfe Tones lead 2-3 to 1-5 at half-time.

A free from Twomey had the sides level again before Brian O’Sullivan put Wolfe Tones back in front. Twomey and William Buckley pointed for the Barrs, to make it 1-8 to 2-4 to keep them in front.

Walsh hit back for Wolfe Tones and with the sides level, it looked like heading to extra-time. But subs Fionn Crowley and Ozabar Kennedy combined for the Barrs to see the latter goal as they led going into injury-time.

Bucinskas pulled a point back for Wolfe Tones, but Twomey got the last score to seal the win for the Barrs.
