Seandún 5-18 Imokilly 1-5
A strong all-round performance from Seandún saw them through to the next round of the SE Systems Senior Championship last night.
Considering this squad haven’t had that much time together, this was a very impressive performance and Seandún could have a big say in this year’s championship.
Their teamwork was exceptional. From the outset, Seandún attacked the game with flair. Three wides inside three minutes showed their intent.
As Imokilly settled with their defence working extremely hard it was ten minutes before the game got its first score. At that point Imokilly themselves had three wides and it looked as if very little would separate these sides over the hour. But the experienced individuals in the Seandún side along with strong battling qualities and a teamwork approach saw them lead by 3-8 to 0-3 coming up to half time.
With Amy Lee highly dependable in goal, Courtney O’Keeffe, Niamh O’Leary and Michelle Murphy excellent in defence, the commanding Katlyn Hickey and Susan Kate Brosnan in midfield, Seandún’s stylish forwards received a plentiful supply. And how they used it.
Teamwork was at a premium as Hayley Ryan, Lauran Homan, Sinead Mills and Laura O’Neill turned it on. Ryan and O’Neill hit the net as Seandún were pulling away fast. But Imokilly hit a purple patch where a good goal by Clodagh Finn on 31 minutes was followed by a penalty a minute later. But the penalty was saved and Seandún took a 12-point advantage into the break.
It was a mountain to climb for a young Imokilly side. They battled throughout and will develop from what was a tough physical game.
The second half took off in much the same fashion with Seandún still eager and attacking. Laura Homan restarted the scoring with Hayley Ryan and Imokilly’s Clodagh Finn swapping points. But any hope Imokilly had of rescuing something from the game was well and truly dashed when Sinead Mills finished a brilliant team move to the net.
From there the points came fast. Clodagh Finn had a chance to goal with another penalty but it sailed over the crossbar for Imokilly’s second and only score of the second half as a rampant Seandún continued to impress.
Both sides made full use of their bench as Imokilly try to find the right blend to take on Newcestown next Saturday in the backdoor losers round and Seandún move on to round three where they face Glen Rovers.
On the evidence of such a strong display and with quality clubs representing Seandún in Blackrock, Brian Dillon's, St Vincent's, Na Piarsaigh, Bishopstown and Nemo Rangers it should be a tight and highly entertaining clash with Glen Rovers.
Imokilly clubs also gave a strong return to Imokilly from Youghal, Fr O’Neills, Watergrasshill, Aghada, Midleton, Castlemartyr, Castlelyons and Bride Rovers.
