Castlehaven 5-11 O’Donovan Rossa 3-8

A blistering start to the second half from Castlehaven enabled them to defeat O’Donovan Rossa following this thrilling junior B county final.

The club is on a roll in recent years, adding this trophy to the junior D and junior C titles they previously landed.

Castlehaven trailed by one point at the interval, but they produced a dominant performance in the third quarter. They struck 2-6 without reply in the opening 17 minutes of the second half, which propelled them to victory. Castlehaven dominated for large periods, but they were thwarted on numerous occasions by the heroics of Rossa custodian Eabha Lucey.

The Haven were far more clinical in the second half. Talented forwards Mairead O’Driscoll and Katie Cronin greatly impressed, while wing forward Grainne O’Sullivan also made a significant contribution.

O’Donovan Rossa, who were without Cork senior star Laura O’Mahony through injury, battled gallantly throughout. They displayed great character, but the greater experience and physicality of their opponents were huge factors in their success. Rossa full-forward Kate O’Donovan produced a brilliant display.

She appears destined for a bright future.

The early exchanges were frantic. The sides were level at 0-3 apiece after 12 minutes.

Castlehaven netted their opening goal in the 15th minute through Grainne O’Sullivan which moved them three points clear. Mairead O’Driscoll struck her first goal in the 24th minute which moved the Haven six points clear.

The Rossas finished the half strongly however with Kate O’Donovan netting a brace and Sarah Hurley adding a fine point. This enabled them to hold a one-point lead at the interval, 2-6 to 2-5.

Castlehaven started the second half with a purpose. They were ruthless as they brushed clear of the Rossas.

Mairead O’Driscoll and Grainne O’Sullivan netted two goals respectively which moved them 11 points clear after 47 minutes. Skibb fought bravely and reduced the arrears following another goal from Kate O’Donovan.

The Haven held firm however to capture the Junior B county title for the first time.
