THIS was the third League win in a row for the Cork City women's team after a hard-fought clash Athlone on Sunday in Bishopstown.

A goal apiece from Lauren Egboloniu and Saoirse Noonan in each half was enough to give them all three points.

City were under pressure for the opening 15 minutes of the game when Athlone piled on the pressure. The midfielder Kayla Brady was a constant threat and was unlucky with a powerful strike after eight minutes however her shot was well-gathered by Cork’s Maria O’Sullivan.

Saoirse Noonan had the home team’s first chance of the half after 15 minutes when her shot rifled the crossbar and although the rebound fell to an unmarked Christina Dring, she failed to hit the target.

At the other end, Athlone should have taken the lead once again when Robyn Hetherington beat O’Sullivan in the City goal but the ball hit the post and went out for a goal kick.

City only really came into the game around the half-hour mark and had a superb effort by Saoirse Noonan but once again her strike hit the crossbar.

They had another effort soon after when good work involving Nathalie O’Brien and Saoirse Noonan resulted in a half-chance by Dring, with the shot was parried out for a corner by the Athlone keeper.

Just on the half time mark, a great touch by Noonan played in Lauren Egboloniu who slotted home to put the home side one up at the break.

The second half started how the first half finished with both teams battling hard. Kayleigh Shine and Fiona Owens impressed for Athlone and looked a threat going forward however a run against the play from City saw them double their lead. A superb long-range effort from Noonan hit the back of the net.
