Charleville 3-21 Fermoy 0-15

CHARLEVILLE cruised into the knockout stages of the SAHC with a comprehensive dismissal of fellow Avondhu side Fermoy in Kildorrery.

After winning their opening two group games the men in red were almost guaranteed to progress to the business end of the season prior to throw-in. However, they were in no mood to ease up making the most of the first half wind to lead by seven at the break: 1-11 to 0-7.

Darragh Fitzgibbon was, as you would expect, a constant thorn in the Fermoy side with a personal tally of 1-11 while in the middle Danny O’Flynn and Jack O’Callaghan were in total control.

At the back, an impressive display from Jack Barry in the half-back line helped keep Fermoy at bay for the majority of the game while For the vanquished side, David Lardner was their main scoring threat with Liam Coleman and Brian O’Sullivan also doing their bit to keep the Blackwater Valley men in touch – particularly in the first half.

A goal by Charleville’s Darren Casey was this game’s first major intervention however it wouldn’t be the last for the winners as in the second-period goals from Gavin Keller and Fitzgibbon really put this one to bed early.

Fermoy may have been looking down the barrel from a long way out however there was still a chance of progression but when Bandon and Mallow drew it meant that Denis Ring’s charges championship season was over.

David Lardner and Liam Coleman impressed in front of the posts for Fermoy with 11 scores between them but when the dust settled there was little doubting which side deserved to win.

The loss of Eoin Clancy to a second yellow didn’t help but in truth this one was done well before the corner-back got his marching orders.

Onwards and upwards for the boys from Charleville.
