Mitchelstown 3-20 Kinsale 2-10

MITCHELSTOWN are through to the semi-finals of the Bon Secours Cork IAFC as they deservedly defeated Kinsale 3-20 to 2-10 in Carrigtwohill on Saturday afternoon.

A stunning display from the Town’s forwards, led by Cathail O’Mahony with eight points and two goals from substitute Aaron O’Brien, was enough to see them win this quarter-final clash by 13 points to set up a final four showing with Aghabullogue in two weeks.

The Red and Blacks raced out of the traps and they were ahead 1-5 to no score by the seventh minute with Sean O’Sullivan grabbing the goal with a powerful finish.

Kinsale couldn’t live with their opponent’s pace and power and they would only grab four points before the half time break while Mitchelstown added 10 more points in that time - O’Mahony clinical from play and from frees - to ensure they led at the interval, 1-15 to 0-4.

Although the leaders extended their advantage thanks to a Darragh Flynn point shortly after the resumption, Kinsale rallied and began to reduce the deficit with the excellent Gearoid Finn drilling a penalty into the top left corner in amongst three more unanswered points, 1-16 to 1-7.

But they had given themselves too high of a mountain to climb and Mitchelstown hit back strongly with a brace of coolly finished goals from substitute Aaron O’Brien helping to seal their place in the semis with conviction.

First, he planted the ball past the keeper following an excellent catch and after three more overs for his side, the forward drilled the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

That would be their final score of the game but Kinsale would snatch 1-2 in injury time - including a superb volley from Timmy Broderick into the far top right corner - to reduce the margin of defeat.
