Passage 2-18 Na Piarsaigh 0-19

PASSAGE booked their place in the semi-finals of the Sports Turf Solutions Seandún Junior A Hurling Championship as they came from behind to defeat Na Piarsaigh in a thriller at Ballinlough.

Two second half goals turned the tide in Passage’s favour as they were unlucky not to convert goal scoring opportunities in the opening half and a missed penalty in the final quarter denied them a third goal.

In the opening quarter, Cian McCarthy, who emerged as Passage’s top-scorer, slotted over four points from placed balls, while Alan Keating converted two frees for the Fair Hill side. Dayne Lee, Paul Cunningham and Padraig Gould scored points from play for Na Piarsaigh.

Passage had to wait until the 15th minute for Scott Coughlan to score their first point from play, to tie the scores at five points apiece. The Fair Hill side had Passage on the back foot for most of the second quarter as they outscored Passage by nine points to two, to hold an interval lead of 0-14 to 0-7.

Passage raised their game for the second half as Cian McCarthy drilled home the game’s opening goal within a minute of the restart. Gould replied with a point from play for the Fair Hill side before Passage slotted over three unanswered points to reduce the margin to two points.

Na Piarsaigh tagged on two unanswered points before McCarthy drilled home his second goal, direct from a long range free.

Eoin Moynihan pointed a free for the Fair Hill side before Passage took a grip on proceedings. Niall McCarthy tagged on a point from play and Cian McCarthy pointed two frees, to give their side the lead for the first time in the contest.

Passage were awarded a penalty in the 51st minute, but Cian McCarthy’s shot was off target, yet they outscored Na Piarsaigh by five points to one in the final quarter.
