Dromtariffe 0-20 Newmarket 1-13

DROMTARIFFE closed the door on Newmarket’s dominance to send the E Tarrant & Sons Skoda Dealers Duhallow JAHC kingpins packing after a deserved victory at Meelin on Saturday.

A massive haul of 0-17 from sharpshooter Tomás Howard kept Dromtariffe on a steady course and a return to their second decider in three seasons, having defeated Newmarket in 2018 before Newmarket bounced back to land the title for the first time in 40 years.

Hard though as the defending champions attempted to save their title, Newmarket failed to match the level of consistency that Dromtariffe brought.

At times a cagey affair, stoppages limiting free-flowing fare. It was no surprise that the marksmen on both sides Howard and Donal Hannon were the main scorers early on.

For the best part, defences were on top. Newmarket points from Mikie Browne and Hannon left the minimum between the sides at the restart following the initial water break.

As a unit, Dromtariffe were operating much more effectively yet some of their promising work was undone by faulty shooting after registering 10 wides in the opening spell though Howard and Brandon Murphy did bisect the uprights.

Back came Newmarket, Ryan O’Keeffe and Hannon on target to cut the deficit 0-11 to 0-9 at the interval.

On the resumption, Dromtariffe got some traction, availing of the growing influence of Michael O’Brien, Jack Murphy, Conor O’Callaghan and Mickey O’Gorman in defence with Kevin Cremin and Mark O’Connor moving out the field to win excellent possession.

In attack, Howard demonstrated his range of tricks to point from play and frees with Brandon Murphy also performing to extend their lead: 0-16 to 0-10. However, Newmarket were thrown a lifeline after Hannon netted from a penalty.

Predictably, that sparked a Dromtariffe response, Howard in the thick of the action to shoot points from both play and frees.

That gave Dromtariffe a sufficient cushion, Hannon did reply with a pair for Newmarket but they failed to create any further inroads and their race was effectively run.
