Castlehaven 4-19 Ilen Rovers 2-4

RUTHLESS Castlehaven amassed the massive winning score they needed in seeing off Ilen Rovers in Group B of the Bon Secours Cork PSFC at Ballydehob on Sunday afternoon.

A West Cork derby between two sides desperate for a positive outcome saw Haven secure top ranking in the knockout stages and an automatic semi-final berth.

Although they batted gamely, Ilen Rovers simply had no answer to their opponents intensity throughout a one-sided contest.

Yet, creditably, Ilen bagged two late goals that had the Haven momentarily sweating. Scores elsewhere in the county looked to have denied the latter a place in the last four.

Those green flags didn’t matter in the end as Castlehaven managed to get the points total they required to finish ahead of Nemo Rangers and avoid a county quarter-final.

Mark Collins and Brian Hurley provided the bulk of the winners’ scores on an afternoon Jack Cahalane and Rory Maguire also found the net.

As for an out of sorts Ilen Rovers, the possibility of a relegation play-off looms large on the horizon.

The winners blitzed their opponents during a devastating first quarter and led 1-6 to 0-0 at the first water break.

Castlehaven were 2-10 to 0-2 ahead at half time and another scoring burst during the third quarter looked to have secured that coveted semi-final spot.

A late Ilen Rovers rally saw Conor Harrington and Cian O’Driscoll find the net but it wasn’t enough to prevent Castlehaven from progressing to the penultimate round of the championship.
