THE promotion hopes of Cobh Ramblers were dealt a blow on Saturday evening after falling to a thumping home defeat at the hands of UCD.

This was most certainly a very poor night at the office as far as Ramblers were concerned.

Although going down to ten men did not help things, Cobh were off the pace and well below par compared to their performances overall since the restart Compared to some of their recent performances, Cobh were disjointed and not at it as much in the opening 45 minutes. Conor Drinan had the ball in the net early on but it was ruled out for offside.

The Students showed glimpses of their early threat when Colm Whelan ran through but he was to misfire at the vital moment.

UCD took the lead after 25 minutes on the clock. Liam Kerrigan went on a great run into the penalty area and he was to get a low shot away, which ended up in the net after an unfortunate pinball sequence inside the area, with the final touch coming off Greg Henry.

The Students threatened also in the opening half of play through another Whelan effort and also a Yoyo Mahdy strike, who misfired after running through.

Then the task for Cobh was made even harder when they were reduced to 10 men when John Kavanagh was given his marching orders for a second yellow card.

But it was UCD that led at the break and Ramblers knew heading in at half time an improved second-half performance was needed to come back into the game.

Cobh began the opening half with intent, with Drinan just unable to make a headed connection with an Ian Turner cross.

But then the Ramblers task was made that bit harder when UCD were to extend their lead.

Following a well-worked move by the Students, Yoyo Mahdy found the bottom corner of the net with a crisp finish.

Mahdy went close to extending the lead for the away side through a well-struck effort just moments later.

Despite the best efforts of the home side, it was UCD who by the midway point of the second half looked the more threatening team.

Cobh had a good chance to come back into the game when Chris O’Reilly saw an effort cleared off the line after an initial Drinan effort.

But then UCD were to strike for goal number three, with Liam Kerrigan accurately finding the bottom corner after the visitors hit Cobh on the break.

Things were to get even worse for Ramblers when UCD were to strike for a fourth goal of the night. Colm Whelan was to maintain his composure before duly slotting the ball home.

UCD were not finished there however, as Mahdy was in for another goal through a well taken headed effort from a Michael Gallagher ball in before Whelan got a sixth goal late on from close range.

A night quite simply to forget for Cobh Ramblers.
