Boherbue 1-18 Cullen 0-6

HOLDERS Boherbue justified their favourites tag to retain the Castlecor Potatoes Duhallow JAFC in convincing fashion against a disappointing Cullen challenge at a sun-splashed Dromtariffe.

Collecting their fourth consecutive title, Boherbue were certainly the better balanced and more accomplished side. Following a competitive opening 20 minutes, a major turning point saw Boherbue’s Andrew O’Connor race through the centre of the Cullen defence to drive an unstoppable shot low to the net.

At the outset, Cullen weren’t the least bit intimidated by the task ahead with Cormac Hickey and Luke Murphy showing well to the competitive fare. But once O’Connor exposed the Cullen defence with a superb individual finish, the traffic became incessant one way and namesake Jerry O’Connor might well have added two further majors only to shave the uprights.

Ahead 1-7 to 0-3 at the break, Boherbue continued to play at a pace that Cullen failed to match. There was plenty to admire in Boherbue game’s, CJ O’Sullivan, Jack Daly and Kevin Cremin alert and determined in defence with Patrick Daly and John Corkery winning significant ball in the centre to allow the attacking skills of Gerry O’Sullivan and Jerry O’Connor reel off points.

Cullen ended a barren 21-minute spell for Murphy and Andrew Meade to point in quick succession. That provided Cullen with a glimmer of hope only to be extinguished by Boherbue on putting their foot on the gas for Denis McCarthy and Corkery to add points.

As the game aged, there was a sense of inevitability surrounding the outcome, the tempo had clearly dropped, Boherbue clearly the better side in all departments with defenders Daly and CJ O’Sullivan storming upfield to split the uprights.

An impressive showing by Boherbue and with team captain Kevin Murphy lifting the silverware, thoughts were turning to a county championship where the Duhallow champions haven’t enjoyed the breaks in recent campaigns.
