Ballincollig 2-8 Carrigaline 0-11

BALLINCOLLIG will face Nemo Rangers in the Premier SFC quarter-final after grinding out the victory they needed at Páirc Uí Rinn.

After a defeat to the Barrs in their opening group game, they excelled against Clon but move into the knockout stages knowing they'll need a vast improvement from here.

This was a dour encounter, not helped by the strong breeze and a heavy pitch, which led to numerous mistakes. Ballincollig's two first-half goals were decisive, while Carrigaline battled to the bitter end and forced Jack Gibbons into two fine saves in the last 10 minutes.

Midfielder Daniel Greene clipped over a couple of terrific points, while defensively the underdogs were extremely tenacious anchored by centre-back Cian Barry until his late injury.

Shane Murphy and Cian Kiely impressed bursting out from the Ballincollig rearguard, while Seán Kiely landed two excellent scores.

Pa Kelly ran the game as a deep-lying 14 but went off injured for the second half and they missed his nous, only managing three points in his absence.

The goals were key though.

The first goal was an absolute screamer, Dara Dorgan receiving a Peter O'Neill kick-pass on the D and turning his man before drilling the ball into the roof of the net.

It arrived right before the first-half water-break, with Evan Cooke cleverly adding a second minutes after the resumption, following superb work by Cian Dorgan and Kelly. That made it 2-5 to 0-3 but Carrigaline responded excellently for the rest of the second quarter.

Collig were forced into taking poor options up front for the rest of the half while Carrigaline hit four in a row, two super scores by Greene and a pair of Eanna Desmond frees to go in 2-5 to 0-7 in arrears and then break even in the second half.
