FORMER Bandon player Kate O’Donovan is continuing to impress with the Cork City team who have enjoyed a very successful season.

O'Donovan used the lockdown period earlier this year to enhance her fitness levels which has proved so beneficial now.

“I managed to get fitter during lockdown. I worked really hard to maintain my fitness and improve. My yo-yo test result was the highest it's ever been. We were given specific programmes, which I followed the whole time.

"It had a good mix of strength and conditioning, sprinting and technical work. We had weekly competitions which I always wanted to win."

Cork City have reached the semi-final stages of the FAI Cup following their recent great win against Bohemians, and will now play Treaty United FC.

“We would love to win the cup. If we play to our potential we can certainly do well. Winning the cup would be a great achievement, but we also want to finish the league campaign strongly.”

Saoirse Noonan is again enjoying a great season for Cork City. The talented striker was recently rewarded for her great form with a Player of the Month award.

“Saoirse has been class. She has chipped in with a few goals, but her assists have also been so important. She is always helping and encouraging players on the pitch.”

Kate’s older sister Aine is also very influential within the Cork City senior team. “Aine helps out with the senior team. It is nice to travel to stadiums all over Ireland with my sister. However, if I have a bad training or game she will let me know. She keeps me grounded. She's also an academy coach with the club.

"It is great to have her involved in that aspect as she loves working with players.”

Ladies soccer continues to grow on an annual basis in Ireland. O'Donovan credits Bandon AFC for being such a progressive club with regards equality and promoting ladies soccer.

“The 20X20 campaign has been a great initiative. In our league there are a lot more live streams and interest in social media. The Women's National League show has set up a platform across all social media outlets which has been fantastic in promoting all the teams and players. Bandon always try to promote all its teams.

"Even when numbers are low, they will always do their best to make sure all the girls in Bandon have an opportunity to play soccer. They are a fantastic club with some amazing people involved.

"The club brings so much to the community.”
