UCC 26 Old Crescent 26

ANOTHER thriller at the Mardyke as Old Crescent came from 19-0 down at half time to share the spoils with UCC in the Energia Community Series Conference 1 at the Mardyke.

This result will be a set back to the Students who looked to have weathered the storm with a converted try ten minutes from time to lead 26-12.

Crescent never gave up and with speedy wingers in Daniel Hurley and Val McDermott; they always posed problems with ball in hand while Ronan McKenna kicked three superb conversions.

Both sides were eager to run the ball at every opportunity as neither side had a penalty kick at goal during the contest.

The students had a kickable penalty in the opening minutes but opted for a five-metre line out which Richard Thompson won and after a few pick and goes by the pack James Taylor sent Kieran Coghlan in for a try in the corner.

Slowly Crescent worked their way into the game with quick ball to the wings and this had College on the back foot.

The students lifted the siege and again their pack was camped on the Crescent line. College won a penalty and opted for a scrum. Ryan Murphy broke and released the ball for Matthew Bowen to score in the corner and Taylor converted.

A great carry by Murphy saw Bowen score his second try which Taylor converted to leave College ahead 19-0.

Crescent opened their account in the 49th minute when Hurley gathered the ball on the halfway line and sprinted up the wing to score and McKenna added the extras.

Micheal O’Hanrahan scored Crescents second try on 60 minutes and McKenna converted to leave a score between them.

College lifted their game and a sweeping move involving Cian Whooley, Coughlan and Harry O’Riordan saw Murphy find the gap to score and Whooley converted.

Crescent’s response was swift as Micheal O’Hanrahan touched down and a great run by McDermott saw him score Crescent’s fourth try and McKenna converted both to tie the scores.
