West Cork demolish Aghada to set up another county final against Mourneabbey

West Cork 9-15 Aghada 1-9

WEST Cork cruised into this year’s senior ladies county final following this comprehensive win secured against Aghada in Cloughduv on Saturday evening.

West Cork produced a brilliant display that enabled them to secure their county final berth for the third successive year. They now proceed to a much-anticipated county final showdown against reigning champions Mourneabbey.

West Cork possessed a team full of heroines. They were dominant in every sector of the pitch as they ruthlessly brushed aside the gallant challenge of Aghada with ease.

Fiona Keating and Aine Terry O’Sullivan were especially brilliant in the winners' attack. The talented duo amounted for 7-8 of their final total.

West Cork players possess a great work ethic, while they attack with pace which enabled them to breach a beleaguered Aghada defence with alarming regularity. Their link-up play and concise passing were a joy to behold as they sent out a measure of their intent with this clinical display.

West Cork started with real intent. They cruised into a 10-point lead after 10 minutes.

Team captain Aine Terry O’Sullivan opened the scoring in the second minute before Fiona Keating netted their opening goal in the fourth minute. She finished off good combination play by Rachel Murphy and Aine Terry O’Sullivan.

Beara club player Aine Terry quickly added two further points, before Fiona Keating netted her second goal in the ninth minute following a brilliant individual run. Valley Rovers star Daire Kiely then struck her first point which moved them ten points clear.

Aghada opened their scoring account in the 11th minute through Christine Moran. A rampant West Cork outfit quickly netted their third goal through Fiona Keating.

The dual star applied a great finish after good approach play by Libby Coppinger and Aine Terry O’Sullivan. West Cork ended the opening quarter 13 points clear, 3-5 to 0-1 after Cork senior Melissa Duggan pointed.

West Cork were in a ruthless mood. They continued to move through the gears impressively. Aine O’Sullivan added another two points before Fiona Keating struck for her fourth goal in the 18th minute after a sharp turn and finish.

Aghada to their credit battled away. Hannah Looney and Emma Farmer were very influential for the East Cork side. Martina O’Brien thwarted Aileen McGrath with a fine save before they were rewarded for their improved play when Aisling Bennett netted after a sublime chip.

This reduced the arrears to 15 points after 24 minutes. West Cork finished the half strongly, however, with Libby Coppinger adding a brace of points which enabled them to hold a convincing interval lead, 4-10 to 1-4.

Aghada started the second-half brightly with Looney and Farmer influential. They added a couple of nice scores to offer hopes of a comeback. West Cork however finished with a flourish as they netted five goals in the closing stages. Fiona Keating netted her fifth, Aine Terry got two goals, with Melissa and Libby also on target.

Attention for West Cork now turns to a county final clash against Mourneabbey as they seek to capture their first senior ladies football title.
