Son to the fore as he beats his dad in the Muskerry Scratch Cup final

WINNING your first major golf event must be a great feeling, but when you have to beat your dad it must make for a strange experience.

That’s what happened 19-year-old David Howard in Muskerry when he beat his dad, John, in the final of the Ford Junior Scratch Trophy.

It was the 50th staging of the event in Muskerry, and the first time that family members faced off against each other in a final.

From a starting field of 64, both golfers defied the odds to make it to the final, with David sealing the win on the 17th after a long weekend of golf.

David had taken the lead on a few holes only to be pegged back by his dad.

“He’s a great player with the best short game ever,” said David.

“He broke my heart on a few holes getting up and down when I thought I was going to win the hole.”

After going two up on the 16th, David finally sealed the win on the 17th when John failed to win.

It was a family affair for the Howard’s in the final, David’s brother Michael was caddying while his other brother Jack was on the bag for John.

The golf mad family are all members of Fota Island and Jack is an assistant pro at the three-time Irish Open host venue.

David, John and Michael are all single figure handicappers while Jack spent some time playing off scratch before joining the PGA in 2017.
