Prestigious Cork City Sports athletics meet is postponed until 2021

THE 69th Cork City Sports will not take place until July 2021.

The prestigious athletics meet was due to take place on July 7 but the committee has been forced to defer it for 12 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chairman Tony O’Connell explained they were left with no choice, especially in light of the recent postponement of the Olympics.
"The decision was taken to protect the health of the athletes and everyone involved and to support the containment of the COVID-19 virus.

"We must thank our loyal sponsors for their support and understating and looks forward to next year’s meet which will still be held in an Olympic year,” said O'Connell

The Cork City Sports has been hosted at CIT in recent years and attracts athletes from across the world, as well as local heroes such as Phil Healy, and previously Rob Heffernan and Sonia O'Sullivan.

Meet director Joe Hartnett added: “We were very much looking forward this year’s meet, but the priority has to be to keep participants and spectators safe. We had a spectacular event in 2019 and we are in no doubt that 2021 will be the best yet”.
