Macroom boxer Murphy is top of the bill in Big Apple bout

UNBEATEN Cork southpaw Noel Murphy insists he won’t be singing the blues in New York next month and that another title is on its way to Leeside.

The Macroom lefty is slated to meet undefeated Mikkel LesPierre in the main event of the evening on February 7 at the BB King Blues Club in Times Square.

LesPierre, a 32-year-old Brooklyn native, has won 18 and drawn one of his 19 outings. New York-based Murphy, who won five fights last year, has racked up 12 victories so far and is the current Celtic welterweight champion.

His Cork-born manager, Kevin Crowley, explained that the Big Apple derby could be for one of the WBC minor belts with Murphy dropping down a notch to light-welter.

Murphy didn’t come home for Christmas and trained right through the holidays and predicts that there’s only going to be one winner at the 42nd Street venue.

“I’m delighted to headline an event in New York City and can’t wait until February 7th, I want to thank Lou DiBella (promoter) and my manager Kevin Crowley for putting this fight together," said the 23-year-old.

“I’m looking forward to testing myself at the 140lbs division and giving the fans a good fight. Mikkel LesPierre is a tough opponent but I have no doubt that belt is coming home with me back to Cork, back to Macroom.”

Murphy had no hesitation taking the eight-rounder and will have no problem making weight, according to Crowley. “The fight will take place as part of Lou DiBella’s Broadway Boxing,” he said.

“Lou is working with the WBC to make the fight for one of the WBC minor titles at the junior welterweight limit of 140lbs. Noel is already working towards that weight.

“This will be his first time at 140lbs as a pro but he has a great team around him and we are confident he will make it the right way and be very strong on the night.”
