Kiltha Óg hit the goal trail to overcome Rockies in Premier 2 hurling decider

Kiltha Óg 3-13 Blackrock 0-17

KILTHA Óg last night lifted the Carrigaline Court Hotel Minor Premier 2 Hurling Championship title as they deservedly defeated Blackrock by five points in Páirc Uí Rinn .

Blackrock started the game brilliantly as they raced into a five-point lead inside the opening six minutes thanks to scores from Peter Linehan, Peter Leneghan, and three from Robbie Cotter.

Kiltha eventually settled into the game and they opened their own account in the eighth minute when James Ahern fired over when bearing down on goal.

And they were level by the end of the first quarter as Eoghan Martin split the uprights moments after corner forward Niall McGrath drilled a thunderous shot into the top right corner of the net.

The two sides soon swapped three scores each, but it was Kiltha who would take a three-point advantage into the half- time break following converted frees from Mike Leahy and Eoghan Martin and a well-taken over from Ciaran Sice, 1-8 to 0-8.

They would take that form into the second half as they extended their lead to six points with Niall McGrath, Niall Morgan, and Charlie Cremin (free) raising the white flags.

But the Rockies, to their credit, refused to give up and they got their first score in 14 minutes of play when Dean McCarthy stuck the sliotar over the black spot.

Momentum was now with the yellow and greens and with the help of Alan Connolly’s precision from frees, they scored five without reply to equalise, 1-11 to 0-14.

But it was Kiltha who would snatch the victory in the closing stages, as Niall McGrath and Niall Flynn scored the deciding goals late on.
