Get ready for a Corker as Brunell and Mathew's set up a National Cup semi-final showdown

Singleton’s SuperValu Brunell 66 IT Carlow 52

AT least one Cork team will be heading to Dublin for this year's National Cup finals.

Singleton’s SuperValu Brunell advanced to the semi-finals of the Paudie O’Connor Women’s National Cup beating IT Carlow at the Parochial Hall on Saturday, and they'll face rivals Fr Mathew’s in January. That local derby will take place on Leeside on the weekend of January 11-13.

Mathew's were too strong for NUIG Mystics, with sisters Gráinne and Niamh Dwyer sharting 39 points, while Shannon Brady had 18, in a 83-68 win for James Fleming's side.

Ambassador UCC Glanmire were knocked out though, after a 77-40 beating from DCU Mercy on the road.

Danielle O’Leary put in an MVP performance for Brunell, shooting vital baskets when her team needed them, and her leadership rubbed off in the second half.

“I’m over the moon with the girls,” Brunell’s coach Tim O’Halloran said. “We locked them down early in the game, and held them to only 28 points in three-quarters of the game."

Brunell raced into an early four-point lead with baskets from Linda Rubene. Carlow responded with outside shooting by Kate O’Flaherty and led 14-12 in a poor first quarter.

The home team began the second quarter with two three-pointers by Simone O’Shea and O’Leary to lead 18-14. Carlow were really struggling at this period on the offensive court as their shot selection was crazy as they were just caught and shot from outside the arc and trailed 24-16 midway through the quarter.

Amy Murphy found her range in the closing minutes of the period nailing a three-pointer and a short jumper to lead 29-21 at the half.

The third quarter Brunell shared the ball offensively, making space for their shooters to knock down their open looks, and ran the floor finishing at the rim. Carlow went into total meltdown only scoring seven points in the whole quarter and there was no way back.
