Cork ladies footballers in charity skills challenge

THE Cork ladies footballers have enjoyed many a battle on the pitch against Galway, but now they are taking them on in a slightly different way.

This Saturday they are going head-to-head in a skills time challenge in aid of LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.

Like many organisations their funding has been severely hit by Covid-19 and they are desperately in need of support to maintain their services to those in need.

One of the organisers of the fund-raiser is Cork captain, Doireann O’Sullivan who said: “With some spare time on our hands I thought it would be a good idea to do a fund-raiser for a charity.

“I put it into our WhatsApp group and the girls all came back with different ideas. We settled on a skills challenge and then someone said why not do it against another county side rather than just ourselves.

“So we made contact with Galway, through Tracey Leonard, and she asked their squad and they were delighted to get involved. Because of that we decided it had to be a national charity and after some discussion we picked the LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.”

The LauraLynn Model of Care is based on five pillars of children’s hospice care: Direct Care, Family Support, Symptom Management, End-of-Life Care, and Bereavement Support.

The aim is to ensure that the right child receives the right care, at the right time, in the right place, by the right team.

With that in mind they came up with five challenges, all against the clock and have divided the panel into groups for each one.

So there will be eight or so players for every challenge which are: Right leg kicks against a wall; left leg kicks against a well; crossbar challenge for those with access to one; keepy uppies and the last one is press-ups.

Every player has 60 seconds to do as many of their particular challenge as they can, with Doireann admitting that not too many volunteered for the press-ups one.

“I have to do the press-ups challenge as not too many wanted to do it, but in the end we got the eight players from both sides. The idea for each challenge is simple, if you beat your opponent then you get a point for your team and Tracey and myself will have access to a leaderboard to post the scores.

“I will be taking over the Cork LGFA twitter and instagram accounts for the day and will post some of the challenges across the day, with the winners announced at 9pm on Saturday night.

“As well as county pride there will be a bit of personal pride (in a good way) with direct opponents in games going up against each other. Eimear Meaney will be up against Louise Ward and Eimear Scally will be taking on Roisín Leonard, are two examples and none of them will want to lose out.

“That’s just adding to the fun really and at the end of the day it’s all about raising as much as we can for the hospice,” concluded Doireann.
