Cork boxer Christina Desmond marches on at World Championships

CORK welterweight Christina Desmond meets Turkey’s Busenas Surmeneli in Siberia today aiming to become the first boxer in over a century of the sport on Leeside to claim a World Elite medal.

The Macroom southpaw beat Canada’s Pan American finalist Myriam Da Silva to set up the quarter-final clash with the Trabzon native with at least bronze on the line at the World Women’s Elite Championships in Ulan-Ude.

Desmond, who already beat England’s Commonwealth champion Sandy Ryan in Siberia, earned one 10-8 round en route to an emphatic 30-26,30-27,30-27,30-27,29-28 unanimous decision over the Quebec-born number five seed at the 11th edition of the tournament.

“Hold your ground,” was the advice from Irish head coach Zaur Antia during the break after the end of the first round.

The Fr Horgan’s BC ace was heard remarking that “she’s jumping in on me.”

Desmond held her ground and appeared to drop the Canadian with a left hook in the second frame but that was ruled a slip while the Irish Elite champion found the target with the majority of heavier shots and combinations in all three rounds.

“I am very happy with my performance. A bit slippy but felt like she didn’t want to box. The Turk is very good but myself and coaches will talk tactics tomorrow. My main focus is recovery now,” said Desmond who is coached by Tom Power at the Fr Horgan’s club.

Surmeneli beat Italy’s fourth seed Assunta Canfora, who Desmond beat twice in 2017 in Dublin, on a unanimous decision in the corresponding last 16 fight yesterday.

Mick O’Brien, President of the Cork Board, said they were thrilled to see Desmond through to a World quarter-final and hailed her performance against the Pan Am silver medallist.

Meanwhile, Dundalk lightweight Amy Broadhurst will meet Katie Taylor’s conqueror Mira Potkonen in the last eight in Siberia today.

Finland-born Potkonen, who beat Taylor at Rio 2016, outpointed Broadhurst in the semi-finals of the European Elites in Madrid in August of this year.

Desmond and Broadhurst will be in action in the second session which begins at 11am on Thursday.
