Business League not to complete current season

FOLLOWING a management committee meeting, the Cork Business League can confirm the remainder of the 2019/2020 season will not be completed.

The FAI have recently released a pathway for a safer return to football, outlining the timelines for which the 2019/2020 season could be played out in the period between August 28th and October 11th.

Since then, a criteria for returning was also sent to all leagues that must be adhered to if the season was to return.

For many reasons, some outlined below, the decision has been taken to not complete the season, for both divisions and all outstanding cup competitions.

The health and safety of our players, managers and referees.

Uncertainty over club and player insurance.

The availability of venues and pitches where our clubs rent and play out of.

The integrity of our league and cup competitions.

Feedback from our clubs surrounding certain risks and issues about returning so soon.

We understand that some of our clubs who may have been anxious to return during the above period will be disappointed with the outcome of this decision.

However, the overall safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in the CBL has to be the greatest priority in this scenario.

Communication about the new 2020/2021 season will be distributed out over the next couple of months, where the CBL will be back bigger and better than ever.

Any return to football within the CBL will follow strict adherence to all guidelines given to us by the government, the HSE and the FAI.

League secretary Peter Travers commented on the decision.

"Following the announcement of the government and HSE guidelines we thought it was the best option, taking everything into consideration, not to continue with the 2019 / 2020 season.

"While we as a league strive to hold up the integrity of all our league and cup competitions, we felt this was the only decision up for discussion really, to put the health and safety of all involved in the league as a priority.

"Obviously, our plans for this season and perhaps next season have clearly been affected by COVID-19 but we have a hard-working and committed management committee that will help re-build and re-structure the league once football returns.

"While we envisage we will continue to go from strength to strength over the next three to five years in terms of new personnel, we feel that now is the time to prepare what must surely be the most critical period in the long and celebrated history of one of Cork’s best loved leagues."
