An elderly woman has died following a fatal road traffic collision in Midleton this morning.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the single car road traffic collision which occurred on St Mary’s Road in Midleton at approximately 10:30am this morning (Friday 26 August).

A female aged in her 80s, the driver of the car and sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place at a later date.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators have been requested to examine the scene and the local Coroner has been notified.

The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place.

“Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward and for those with camera footage to make it available to them. Anyone with information can contact Midleton Garda Station 021 462 1550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station,” said a Garda spokesperson.

County Councillor for the Midleton area, Susan McCarthy, offered her condolences to the family of the woman involved in the fatal collision, who she says are well known locally. 

"She was a lovely woman, I’m just really really disappointed and sorry to hear it," she said. 

"My condolences go out to the family, they’re a lovely family and would be very well known," she added.
