TWENTY-five students from the Labiaga Ikastola school of Bera in the Basque Country are paying a visit to Cork.
This is the second visit the Labiaga Ikastola has made to Cork. Last year the school had planned a trip to Paris, France but due the Bataclan incident in the French capital, their parents had reservations about the students visiting France.
Through a contact in the Cork Basque Solidarity Committee, Donie Mc Grath, the school re-arranged their plans and travelled to Cork.
Such was the success of the 2016 trip that the school returned this year with the hope of developing an exchange relationship with Deerpark Secondary School.
This year Labiaga will again take part in a cultural evening of music and dance organised by Maurice Dineen of Ballyphehane Club Ceoil.
Last year's event was very enjoyable and Basque teachers Jon Diez and Leire Barrutia thanked Maurice and Kevin Barry, principal of Deerpark School for hosting this year's entertainment.
The group's itinerary also includes attending Gig na Gaelainne in Cork's City hall.
Maurice and Club Ceoil Ballyphehane said they are delighted to welcome back the kids and teachers from the Basque country and are thrilled to have this connection with this group.
Both Jon and Leire are hopeful that this trip will one of many and the links created will grow stronger with time.
