A UK yachtsman was airlifted to hospital after being rescued from his damaged boat in high seas off the Cork coast.
The 26-year-old was rescued off his yacht, called the Skyland, off Roches Point yesterday evening after he activated a personal locating beacon at around 4pm.
His call for help was picked up by a satellite monitoring station in Scotland, which raised the alarm with the Irish Coastguard.
The Rescue 117 helicopter from Waterford went to the location and alerted the LE James Joyce, which was patrolling locally.
Initially, the R117 could not see any vessel in distress but then found the yacht and crew contacted the LE James Joyce.
A RIB was dispatched to the yacht from the naval vessel to rescue the yachtsman from the damaged yacht before he was airlifted to Cork University Hospital.
He was treated there for mild hypothermia.
